Frequently Asked Question

Create Picture-in-Picture and Wall Streams
Last Updated 15 days ago

DeskCamera can combine several video sources into one stream. This is useful when you want the NVR/VMS to record several views as a single camera.

Combined streams can use screen sources, webcams, screen areas, external RTSP or HTTP sources, and image sources.

Available layouts

  • Picture in Picture: one main source with a smaller source over it.
  • Wall 1x1: two sources in one stream.
  • Wall 2x1: three sources in one stream.
  • Wall 2x2: four sources in one stream.

Create a combined media source

1) Create the individual media sources first.

2) Go to Video & Audio Settings.

3) Click Add Media Source.

4) Select Combined media.

5) Choose the layout you want to use.

6) Select the media sources for each position in the layout.

7) Choose the output resolution and save the media source.

8) Start DeskCamera and add the combined stream to the NVR/VMS.

Tips

  • Use sources with similar aspect ratios when possible.
  • Use a lower output resolution or FPS if the PC is under high load.
  • Test the combined stream before adding it permanently to the NVR/VMS.

Image updates in combined streams

DeskCamera supports webcam and image sources inside combined streams. If an image source uses Watch disk file change, image updates also work when the image is used inside a combined stream.

For image source details, see Stream a Static Image as an ONVIF/RTSP Camera.

For external source details, see Convert an External RTSP Stream to ONVIF and Convert an HTTP Video Stream to ONVIF.

Troubleshooting

The combined stream is slow or choppy.
Lower the output resolution or FPS, or reduce the number of sources in the combined stream.

One source does not update.
Test that source by itself first. If it works by itself, recreate or update the combined media source.
